feedback for tilly and yasmin

L3 - GROUP 8 (Yasmin & Tilly) Film Opening Rough Cut from cmdiploma on Vimeo.

I think the strengths of this video are the stills of the different stereo types with pictures and a short description. I also like the way that it is written on paper to show that these stereo types especially exist in schools.

However the weakness of this idea is that the stills don't stay on screen long enough to read the description all the way through. Also because they've had to lower the quality so that the video can be streamed online it's hard to read the writing but there isn't really anything they can do about that.

The only fault i can find that they could change is some of the cuts look strange when it goes from the white stills to the video. I think this is because the still images only take up half the screen so the cross dissolve only takes up half the screen and the other half just fades in from black.

They still need to do they're titles.

Roughcut feedback

L3 - GROUP 9 (Tom H & Louis) Film Opening Rough Cut from cmdiploma on Vimeo.

The feedback we got for our roughcut was useful and really showed us how important it is to have other people look at it before we finish it as there were things that we didn't notice but other people did. One of these things was where the guy in a suit goes to unlock the door and puts the baseball bat on the floor he then goes into the shed and hits the prisoner with the bat. However when he goes into the shed he doesn't pick the bat up, he leaves it outside. I dont know how we can get around this without having to film the shot again but we will try.
It was also pointed out in our feedback that our match on action shots could be cut neater so that the pening flows a lot better.

The strength of our video was rated as the location because "it has a really urban and grimy atmosphere and builds a lot of tension and mood". This is exactly what we were going for so I am pleased.

Other feedback was that the music made it seem like it was going to be more of a street crime film rather than a film about organized crime which it was it is supposed to be. We were also told that some of the titles should be moved like when it goes into widescreen, the titles should be in the picture rather than on black./>

When we get back we are planning to cut out match on action shots a lot better and over all make the video look more professional. There is not much more to do apart from moving some of the titles so that they are more centered.

Film with things in common

I wanted to use a shot from American gangster but i couldn't find it so i couldn't put an image however i will keep looking. it has allot of similarities to the opening that we have done. The theme is the same with the gangster re paying a debt by taking a life. this is why we called the film retribution meaning to repay. This scene also captures the gas can, the gangster and the hostage which is all the same as ours. The gangster character also uses a gun to murder the hostage but we thought that this would give the wrong sort of impression as British murders do not include guns very often so we used a baseball bat instead. But the idea of using a weapon to show power of the character is the same.

Shooting so far

We have finished all our shooting so far and have made a rough cut with no music or titles.

We had two days which we went out to shoot. In the first we just got the big panning shot, all of the shots of buildings and the shot of the railway. The second day we got the rest done in louis's dads shed. The shooting all went very well and we got all and moe of what we had planned. We did change the sequence slightly as we found things that we thought would not work and things which would work better like the shadow shot.

Best shot of filming

My favorite shot was when we had a shot of the shadow of the gangster character hitting the prisoner. I thought this was good because it was arty and gave a very good atmosphere

opie

This is my opie which i made on photoshop. I took the picture on photobooth with the bulge effect on, thats why my hair looks too big and my eyes too far apart. All the different colours are on different layers. I made the shapes using the pen tool.

If i did this task again i would ajust the pen tool so that there is a thin line between the shapes. I would also use a better picture which is not out of proportion.

contact sheet

We made this contact sheet in photoshop using images that we found on images.google.com which we thought represented the ideas that we had in our heads. The font is one which we downloaded on dadfont.com when we were making our font board. We changed some of the images to black and white to make them look more atmospheric and also changed the brightness and contrast.

our idea

our opening sequence is going to be a action, gangster thriller. the scene will start with a man tied to a chair. he will have the appearance that he has been beaten up and brought to the location unwillingly. There will be freeze frames on the characters with titles.

Feedback

I like the sims idea! Crazy! You still need to remember to paste your Pages doc onto the blog. Very good reference to the prelim task

prelimanary task

For this task we had to re create a film which our teachers had made. We had to use continuity editing which is where you cut the clips so that the next clip starts where the last one finished. e.g. if the is a long shot of someone opening a door and then it cuts to a clos up of teh handle going down, you need to make sure the handle is in the same place at the end of the first clip to the begining of the next.

We also had to use the 180 degree rule (only shooting within 180 degrees of the characters in the shot). The match on action rule which is to help when doing the continuity editing and the shot reverse shot rule. The 180 degree rule is very inportant when doing this to make sure you keep the characters on the same side of the screen.

I think we did well in this task as we got all of the shots done and used continuity editing as well. I think if we had teh chance to do it again i would make the volumes louder for the diolog as you cannot hear it very clearly. Also i would put longer gaps between the speach and cuts as it seems like the convosation is very fast with no gaps between different characters lines esspecially the lines 'I want to burn a blank CD' and 'What do you need it for?'

font board

The fonts we chose are all very edgy, dark and distorted and this is why we chose them. i feel that they go with the feel of our opening.

mood board and title board

The Pictures we chose are to represent the setting and atmosphere of our opening.
